What Is Food-Grade Silicone? (And Why It Matters for Your Baby)

If you've been shopping for baby plates, bowls, or feeding products lately, you've probably seen the phrase "food-grade silicone" everywhere. But what does it actually mean — and does it matter?

As the founder of Ladydaidy, a baby tableware brand built with this material, here's everything you need to know.

The short answer
Food-grade silicone is a non-toxic, rubber-like material made from silica (derived from sand). It's heat-resistant, odorless, and free from BPA, BPS, phthalates, and PVC. When it meets food safety standards — like FDA approval in the US or LFGB certification in Europe — it's considered one of the safest materials for baby and toddler products.

Food-Grade vs. Regular Silicone — What's the Difference?

Not all silicone is the same.

Industrial-grade silicone is used in construction sealants and electronics — you don't want that anywhere near your baby's food. Food-grade silicone is specifically manufactured and tested to be safe for contact with food and mouths.

The key distinction is purity. Lower-quality silicone products are often blended with plastic fillers to cut costs. This makes them cheaper to produce — but it also means they can leach chemicals when heated or exposed to acidic foods. True food-grade silicone contains no fillers.

How to Test If Your Silicone Is Pure

The Pinch Test — Do This at Home
  • Pick up the silicone product and pinch a small section firmly between your fingers.
  • Twist and stretch it while pinched.
  • If it turns white: it's been blended with filler. Put it back.
  • If it stays the same color: it's pure silicone. Keep it.

Why We Use It at Ladydaidy

When we set out to design baby plates that looked as beautiful as the ceramics we'd seen across Europe, we needed a material that could do two things at once: look elevated, and be completely safe for little ones.

Food-grade silicone was the answer. It holds color beautifully — which is why our plates can achieve that elegant finish. It's safe, microwave safe, and soft enough that it won't hurt if your toddler decides to throw it. And built to last, because we designed these plates to be used meal after meal, year after year.

Every Ladydaidy plate is made from 100% food-grade silicone — no fillers, no BPA, no compromise. Because the material your baby eats off of every day matters, and you shouldn't have to choose between safe and beautiful.
